The Self-Directed Work Team Game

Using only the materials provided, participants must pick up a tennis ball and move it from point A (the starting point) to point B without dropping it. The work unit must act in unison to accomplish the task. Managers will direct all activities in the first round, with the workers blindfolded if desired. During the second round, the workers remove their blindfolds and perform the task without management direction.

Objectives

  • to simulate the traditional management model

  • to simulate keeping the workers in the dark (with blindfolds)

  • to simulate an empowered workforce

  • to show that with the proper information and training, the workers can perform successfully.
