The mindset of the coach

All organisations are hierarchies. To function, there has to be an element of command and control. This can be a nurturing relationship in which managers help and support their teams. It can also be an abusive relationship in which managers look after their own interests and exploit the teams which work for them. Regardless of whether it is a supportive or abusive relationship, it is essentially a parent–child relationship.

The parent–child relationship may have worked in a world of lifetime employment: there was mutual commitment and loyalty which benefited both sides. But those days are long gone. Employers expect you to be passionate and committed, until they decide to restructure you out of a job. And ...
