INTERLUDE: Shark Island—A Parable of Risk and Mass Media

You live on Shark Island, a remote tropical paradise. Your village has a hundred people, and the island has ten such villages—a thousand people in all. The island's name has always seemed a bit odd to you, because you've never seen a shark. In fact, nobody in your village ever has; your grandparents and great-grandparents never even met anybody who saw one. The name came from a story that a hundred years ago, in a village on the far side of the island, a shark once ate a swimmer.

Here's the question. It's a hot, humid day, and a dip in the cool ocean water sure would be refreshing. Do you take a swim, or does that shark attack in a faraway village in a faraway time scare you off?
