Putting It All Together

So—where does one begin? Well, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Let's say you just want to drive around the neighborhood and go Wi-Fi hunting. My recommendation is to get an Orinoco Gold card, pigtail, a 5-dBi magnetic mount omni antenna and use NetStumbler. If you are a Linux user, get Kismet and use it with a 200 mw Senao card, pigtail, and 5-dBi magnetic mount omni antenna. (For BSD, use dstumbler.) Put the antenna on your roof and run the cable through the window to your wireless card. Fire up your software and start driving!
