In my home city of San Diego, a local real estate company, Sentre Partners, is on a mission to deploy free wireless access in downtown San Diego. Matt Spathas, a partner with the firm, has a clear vision for deploying free wireless Internet access. Since plenty of bandwidth is available in commercial real estate, and deploying hotspots in public areas is easy and inexpensive, Spathas proposes a citywide grid of free hotspots which will be offered as a community service for travelers, tourists, students, and the general public. You don't need a subscription to use a water fountain or a bathroom, so why make the public pay for using a hotspot?
