Induction
In 1831, Michael Faraday, an English bookbinder turned chemist and physicist, discovered the laws of electromagnetic induction. Just as Oersted discovered that passing an electric current through a wire created a magnetic field, Faraday discovered the reverse process: a magnetic field around a wire created a current. For his experiment, Faraday wrapped a long wire around a tube and passed a magnet back and forth inside the tube. The passing of the magnetic field through the coil of wire “induced” a current in the wire. By discovering induction, Faraday had also created the first electric generator.
