Put a digital camera next to a comparably priced camera that still uses film. What’s the difference? Certainly it’s not anything you can see: They both have a lens, some sort of viewfinder to peer through, and similar assortments of buttons and knobs.

The important difference between the two cameras is buried inside them. Take off the back of the film camera and you’ll see a slot at one end where you insert your cassette of film and an empty spool on the other end to take up the roll of film as each frame ...
