How Lenses Work

A lens can be made from a single piece of curved plastic or a complex system of crystal–clear disks of polished glass. When you pay a lot for a camera, film or digital, a big reason behind the price tag is the lens. A good lens delivers an image as sharp as an eagle’s eyesight and is free of the distortions in color and shape that come with cheaper lenses.
