Miscellaneous Tips

This chapter is mostly about scripting in Houdini, but it also contains little nuggets of wisdom to do with file formats, searching for help, and just using the software more efficiently and effectively. It’s the Lucky Dip of tips and tricks.

Aliases

When you start Houdini, and then open a textport, you can navigate through the network levels using common unix commands like “cd” and “ls.” But these commands are not part of hscript – instead, these commands are created for you as aliases, courtesy of the 123.cmd file.

You can use this fact to create other custom aliases for yourself, to make whatever scripting or navigation work that you are doing, simpler. Just type “alias” in the textport to see how these are set ...
