Serendipity: a word invented by Horace Walpole (1717–1797) in a 1754 letter in which Walpole told about the 3 princes of Serendip, ‘who were always making discoveries, by accident and sagacity of things they were not in quest of.’ (quoted in Shapiro, 1995)
