Chapter 15. Legal Issues

Up to this point we have focused primarily on the technical issues of honeypots. Specifically, we’ve attempted to define the term honeypot, and we’ve addressed how they work, how they add value, and the different issues in building, deploying, and maintaining them. However, we have yet to touch upon a critical issue: the legality of honeypots. Honeypots may help solve a variety of security issues within your organization, but are they legal to use? They can obtain a great deal of information, but is it legal to collect, use, or disclose that information for securing your organization or perhaps for suing or prosecuting the attackers?
