Overview of Honeyd

Honeyd is developed and maintained by Niels Provos of the University of Michigan. [1] First released in April 2002, Honeyd is an OpenSource prepackaged honeypot designed for the Unix platform. OpenSource means that (1) the solution is free, and (2) you have access to the source, which you can customize. It is designed as a low-interaction solution; there is no operating system intended for an attacker to gain access to, only emulated services. Honeyd is designed primarily as a production honeypot, used to detect attacks or unauthorized activity. However, it does have specific applications to research, which we discuss later.
