The editor cuts the film into shape with the director. Although some latitude is possible in expression here (pacing, timing, rhythm), these professionals rarely deviate from the script. They are in fact cutting to the script, accounting for it scene after scene. They understand that this is what the producers signed up to see, so they have the obligation to ensure that the finished product reflects the original intentions embedded in the script.
