Almost 25 years have passed since the celebrated discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTSCs) by G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller in 1986. HTSCs opened a new era for research on superconductivity, from both fundamental physics and materials science perspectives. In the field of fundamental physics, the research on HTSCs has greatly enriched our understanding of the physics in strongly correlated electron systems, although many crucial issues remain to be understood. In the materials arena, great achievements have been made over the last two decades, both in single crystals and in thin films.
