Preface

“Never give up. Never give up. Never ever give up.”

Those are the words of Sir Winston Churchill, as quoted to me by Sir Arthur C. Clarke when I interviewed him in September 2001, two weeks after the unspeakable terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Conversing over an Internet voice connection while a video camera rolled in his home in Sri Lanka, the man who many recognize as the greatest science fiction writer of all time was offering words of hope and compassion to his friends, far away in a shell-shocked nation. But I also found another type of encouragement in the words of this visionary octogenarian and author of more than 80 books and 500 short stories and articles.
