Usually people don't pay enough attention to how a case starts, and that is a shame. Most criminals don't turn themselves in and need to be found. So if you want to investigate cases, you need to know how they start and allow them to do so. The problem here is that if we do not know a crime has been committed, why would we look? Often, it comes down to investigating a tip or following up on something suspicious. The Cuckoo's Egg case, where Cliff Stoll's investigation of a $0.75 discrepancy between two computerized billing systems revealed an international espionage effort is a great example of how a small irregularity can be the sign of a big problem.
