Some Lessons

Don't let the early chapters in this book fool you—not all investigations are successful. We usually do not hear about the unsuccessful cases, and that's too bad. There is a lot that we can learn from the investigations that have failed! Knowing what did not work is as important as knowing what does.

From my experiences, I have noticed that when an investigation fails, it is usually for one of the following reasons:

  • Poor team management

  • Poor case management

  • Impatience

  • Lack of understanding of the technology being investigated

  • Miscommunication

  • Bad luck
