In the Beginning…
ENIAC, the first digital computer, made its debut in 1948. It was extremely large and weighed approximately 30 tons. As you might expect for a computer that size, it was difficult to use. Input was done through switches and wire; a keyboard or mouse was not an option. Instead of a nice monitor, output was through simple lights. It should come as no surprise that few people knew how to operate it.
Over time, technology improved, resulting in smaller, faster computers. By 1969, a computer that was small enough to be placed onboard the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander successfully guided the astronauts to the moon's surface and back into lunar orbit.
