Outsiders: Motivated by Profit and Curiosity

There are quite a few famous cases of outsider hackers, one of which is the case of Vladimir Levin that we discussed earlier. Of note is the fact that Mr. Levin engineered the first reported case of online theft of a bank in U.S. history, stealing $10 Million USD without ever setting foot in the U.S. Impressive.

The typical targets for the outside hackers are

Credit card information. Credit card information, such as an account name/number actually has a street value. As of 2002, the wholesale value of a credit card number was around $25, and the retail value on the black market is around $100 for a card with a credit line of $4000. For $100, a person could spend $4000—a 4000% rate of return!
