The Brits collected enough information and were finally able to start prosecuting Hot-ice. Feeling the pressure, he eventually decided to cooperate, eventually turning over some other hackers and hacked sites that the Brits did not know about. Hot-ice did not get any jail time and did not get convicted of any crime. But the investigation led to the discovery of a multitude of previously unknown compromised government computers, which were finally secured. It led to improvements of intrusion detection systems for many of the victims.
