EXISTING CONDITIONS

Although the existing rail line as described, to be used for a New York to Chicago high-speed passenger and freight rail line, is largely an excellent one where it is intact, there are many improvements that can be made to it. The line has already had several improvements made since its original construction, to reduce curvature and grades and to provide multiple tracks. Many of the improvements contemplated, particularly on the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg segment, were actually considered in the past by the Pennsylvania Railroad management, but financial considerations forced their being dropped.
