The prospects in 2015 for realization of a true high-speed passenger rail system in the United States are as dim as ever in the 50-year modern history of high-speed ground transportation in the United States. In some other countries with high-speed passenger rail systems, it has been found that freight can be carried on the high-speed rail lines, at fast-enough speed to be competitive with other modes of transport, without severely curtailing the ability of the system to carry passengers at high speed.
