Does Anybody Listen to Voicemail?

Let’s not kid ourselves—the vast majority of phone calls go to voicemail. But that’s not a good enough reason to avoid the telephone for prospecting. In fact, I think voicemail, when used properly, is perfect for prospecting.

An excuse I hear far too often is, “Why leave a message when nobody will return it anyway? They’re most likely not even listening to it!” Excuse me for a moment, but I’m going to be blunt: the reason prospects aren’t returning your messages is because you’re leaving garbage messages. That’s right! Garbage messages. Seriously, if you were a prospect and received one of your prospecting messages, would you return it? No! Would you even bother to listen to the entire message?
