Real world testing – Rationale and procedures

8.1 Scope and why essential

This chapter details some of the real world tests that are never mentioned by, or are outside the remit of, the makers of audio ‘test’ instruments.

These real-world tests should be applied by designers, before amplifiers are made; and by makers, before products are shipped. They may also be employed by purchasers, before the money is handed over. The tests, like all sensible QA programs, are based on not accepting anything ‘that should be able to be taken for granted’.

8.2 Listening

Skilled or even casual listening can (and does) reveal both blatant and subtle defects that routine (and even advanced) measurements are ‘stone deaf to.
