Topologies, classes and modes

4.1 Introduction

Topologies

There are seemingly infinite ways to connect parts to form a high performance audio power amplifier’s output and drive stages. In the broadest sense, these ‘ways’ divide into different topologies (unique electrical connectivities or identities in schematic form). As in any other branch of engineering, the development of new topologies has been driven by the need or desire to:

(i) achieve certain performance ratings or goals, e.g. X watts or Y% efficiency; or symmetrical limits, ability to drive a given speaker; nil manufacturing adjustments, and/or many other goals, often simultaneously.
