Chapter 3. Network Topology Fundamentals

Network topology is crucial to the availability of a network. When I say “network topology” here, I am referring to both the arrangement of your networking devices and the failover methods you choose. Parallel topologies provide high availability because even if network devices fail, the network will still run. Serial topologies provide reduced availability compared to parallel topologies because the entire network depends on all the devices working, with little or no room for any failure. Of course keeping a network simple increases availability while at the same time limiting your ability to make all parts parallel.
