Q1. A calorimeter of water equivalent 20 gm contains 1030 gm of water. In it, a paddle wheel is made to rotate by means of two weights each weighing 10 kg falling a distance of 80 metres. Find the rise in temperature of the water, assuming g = 980 cm/sec2.

 

Ans. Potential energy in the raised position for both the weights

 

= 2 ×10,000 × 980 × 8,000 dyne cm

 

If the rise in temperature be θ, then the heat gained by the calorimeter and its contents is 1,050 θ.
