Process Groups

Project management is achieved through the application of standardized processes to project activities in order to meet the project’s requirements. PMI has identified 42 project management processes and has incorporated these into five categories, or process groups, by which all projects should be managed. These five process groups are as follows:

• Initiating

• Planning

• Executing

• Monitoring and Controlling

• Closing

These project management processes apply across all industries. There is wide-ranging belief and acceptance that using these project management processes will improve the chances of a project’s success.
