Approaches to the development of complex systems such as HISs have evolved considerably over the past few decades. The traditional model for developing systems is often called the classic waterfall life cycle. This approach to the SDLC involves the stages described earlier (Planning, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and Support) following one another in such a way that one follows the other in strict sequential order (see Figure 36-12).
