Active Server Pages (ASP)

Active Server Pages (ASP) is a powerful tool for making dynamic and interactive web pages. It is a server-side script language developed by Microsoft that runs inside the Microsoft Windows Internet Information Services (IIS) server. When you use a browser to read an HTML document, the browser at the client computer interprets the tags and displays it as a web page on the browser. However, when an Internet Explorer browser reads an ASP file, IIS passes the request to the ASP engine at the server. The ASP engine reads the ASP file line by line and executes the scripts in the file. Scripts may access any data or databases and return the results to the browser as plain HTML (see Figure 33-10).
