Documents used in the medical industry such as birth records, results of examinations, clinical research, and so on, can be converted to digital format for ease of transmission and searching. Inversely, having a hard copy of a prescription or patient medical information is still important in some cases. Modern printers are often called all-in-one devices, because they might be a printer, photo copier, scanner, and fax machine all at the same time. Some medical equipment will have these capabilities built into the medical device. Medical images can also be scanned at various quality levels. This is often referred to as EMR scanning.
