An Overview of Electronic Health Records and Their Use by Physicians and Hospitals Across the United States

Historically, electronic health records have been the cornerstone of HIT-related efforts focused on improving health and healthcare. Over the last several years, the adoption of EHRs has steadily grown but still remains fairly low. EHRs enable clinicians, hospitals, and other providers to have access to important information about the patient, as well as clinical decision support, both of which assist with the delivery of higher-quality, more cost-effective care. EHRs enable clinical alerts and reminders that help clinicians avoid drug interactions that can cause harm and reduce both gaps and duplications in care.
