In the December 2011 issue of Scientific American, a lattice network diagram, created by scientist Hilary Mason, demonstrates how an analysis of the traffic on the World Wide Web has identified pathways that individuals are using to search the Web. The article refers to these pathways as “The Links We Love.”1 But this lattice could also have been titled “Where the Money Is!” Visible within the lattice is a thick line between health and technology, demonstrating a concentrated activity link. Conversely, distinct within the lattice network are outlier clusters of activity not in synchrony with health and technology: the computer science and engineering clusters.
