9.6. Connecting with a Core Purpose

The third set of organizational codependency immunization activities involves tapping into a core purpose. This is a powerful yet elusive quest, for it is a spiritual journey. In traditional codependence parlance, this is the twelve-step program originally developed for alcoholics. It requires the recovering person to surrender and give himself or herself over to a greater power. The twelfth step reads, "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these [eleven previous] steps, we try to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs" (Beattie, 1987, p. 189).
