The experience with the early process computer installations… clearly indicated the pressing need for analysis of operators’ cognitive tasks and guidelines for interface design. Because of the slow transition in psychological research away from behaviorism and the preoccupation of the early research in artificial intelligence with games and theorem proving, we found it impossible to wait for guidelines from such sources.
