8.1 MOTIVATION

If you were to think of a typical work situation, it would be hard to imagine someone working without the most basic forms of interaction with other people. More often than not, we think of busy offices full of people working with one another, work floors where teams of employees manufacture and assemble parts, or control rooms where managers coordinate processes. It is therefore perhaps surprising that much of the basic research into human-computer interaction (HCI) has not attempted to provide techniques to understand and help design for these situations, preferring to study and provide support for solitary and decontextualized activities. ...
