Gulliver, Frank R. “Post-Project Appraisals Pay.” Harvard Business Review, March–April 1987. British Petroleum (BP) began operating a postproject appraisal unit—a team of inside analysts and investigators who scrutinized projects several years after they had been completed to learn why they succeeded or misfired. The author explains how the appraisal process has helped managers be more accurate in developing project proposals and more efficient in implementing them. He also indicates that every BP project generated a return on investment at least as high as that in the project’s forecast.
