Generating IDE Project Files using Maven

You created a database, compiled code, tested it, and packaged the results in the previous section, but that’s not all you can do with Maven. Maven has a number of plug-ins which are not directly tied to the regular Maven lifecycle. One common feature of any project is the presence of configuration files for an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Often a team will standardize on a single development environment like IntelliJ, Eclipse, NetBeans, or Emacs JDE, and the configuration files for the tools will be distributed as a part of the project. If an organization has standardized on a single set of tools, storing IDE configuration files in version control might make some sense.

Most people have preferences when it comes to development tools, so generating IDE projects from the POM allows for individuals to use the tools with which they are most productive.

Storing IDE configuration in version control doesn’t make much sense when an organization doesn’t use a single set of tools, or—in the case of most Open Source projects—the individuals working on a project have little or no direct communication or power to coordinate such choices as development platform and IDEs.
