Jan ThewissenSandor Karreman and Jorrian Dorlandt     Shanks/Van Vliet Groep, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands

Abstract

Large municipal solid waste (LMSW) is a mixed waste stream generated by households and contains products of different composition, materials and sizes. LMSW is relatively well suited for recycling due to the raw materials it contains. Hence, it is important and economically feasible to separate the materials from the mixed LMSW stream. This chapter describes the state of the art of sorting and separating the fractions in LMSW through a combination of mechanical and manual separation techniques.
