Abstract

Exploration and production activities that are involved with crude oil and natural gas require the constant handling of flammable gases and liquids at high temperature and pressure—many of the liquids and gases are also highly toxic to flora and fauna (including humans) in addition to being highly corrosive. The environmental effects are amplified by the working environment, particularly in offshore structures where working in a limited space in a remote location is the norm.
