A major challenge to information processing is to protect the information from noise in the external environment. Quantum error correction (QEC) is used in quantum computing to protect quantum information from errors due to decoherence and other quantum noise. In this chapter, we give an introduction to the operator theoretic approach to quantum error correction. One may see [Gai08, NC00] for some general background of QEC, and an algebraic approach to QEC. Information on quantum computing can be found in Chapter 74.
