INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides a basic introduction to the Internet and Web technologies. It provides a brief history of the Internet and then explains domain name systems, navigational tools, and search engines. The chapter defines intranets and extranets and compares and contrasts them with the Internet. The chapter concludes with a brief survey of popular applications of the Internet in various industries and fields, including tourism and travel, publishing, higher education, real estate, employment, banking and brokerages, software distribution, healthcare, and politics.
