Modern data centers are experiencing unprecedented growth in scale and power consumption. In 1999, a data center was considered large if it covered 5000 ft2. A decade later, in 2009, a large data center was easily taking up over 500,000 ft2, an increase of 100 times. Some data centers, such as those used by IBM, Google, and Facebook, are even larger; in 2011, construction was started on an IBM data center near Beijing, China, which is expected to top 624,000 ft2.
