Organizations

The subject area Organizations includes notable groups related to energy issues in some way. This section deals mainly with trade unions and with governmental and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Business corporations such as oil companies and coal companies are covered in the Business subject area, which precedes this one.

As with many other aspects of energy, the beginnings of important organizations came in the coal industry. This can be dated from the founding of unions for coal mine workers in the mid to late 19th century, culminating with the creation of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in 1890. The UMWA would eventually become one of the most important labor unions in the U.S.
