Efficiency

The category Efficiency describes advances in the level or degree of effectiveness with which energy is extracted, converted from one form to another, or delivered in the form of an energy service. This may be the improved use of an existing energy source, such as the increased efficiency in the utilization of animal power resulting from the development of the horse collar, or the greater efficiency of coal extraction from the use of the longwall mining technique. It may also be a new device that improves on or replaces an existing device, such as the introduction of steel blades for farm windmills instead of wooden ones, or the invention of the rolling (rotary) bit for cutting through rock in oil well drilling.
