1. Introduction

Evaluation has to be aligned with the goals pursued in each particular design, and is influenced by the theoretical principles on which these designs are based. Situated learning, which considers learning as a complex interplay between the individual and the collective (Lave & Wenger, 1991), leads to questions related to how learners interact with their context, in the classroom or in any community where learning can take place. As pointed out by Sfard (1998), issues related to the evolution of participation in those classes or communities become relevant questions to evaluate learning.
