Abstract

The banking networks of Asia’s financial centers have 19th-century roots. As colonial powers, especially the British, moved into Asia, they organized a banking network built around Hong Kong as Asia-Pacific center and Singapore as Southeast Asia center. The Hongkong and Shanghai Bank was a key part of this network and present-day HSBC (its namesake) retains a similar organization.
