6.2. THE COGNITIVE INTELLIGENCE LANDSCAPE

Cognitive intelligence as used in this chapter refers to IQ. Recent and extensive research that IQ directly impacts leader performance has been firmly established in the leadership performance literature (Schmidt, 2002; Schmidt & Hunter, 1998). There is, however, some debate about the contribution and role of IQ to leader success. Zagorsky (2007) reports finding no relationship between IQ and wealth, although those with higher IQ do tend to be paid higher salaries than people with lower IQs. Lynn and Vanhanen (2002) found that the mean IQ of 185 nations strongly correlated with the macroeconomic performance of the nations and explained half the variance in gross domestic product per capita.
