14.4. SHAPING SI IN THE UNIFIED APPROACH

We can ask both how socially intelligent the person is compared to some norm (the SET Approach) and what SI a person has (the INTERSECT Approach). While the concept is still being developed, it is possible to empirically explore the "social" within EI by addressing both approaches. We recognize three major models of EI as acknowledged by the Encyclopedia of Applied Psychology (Spielberger, 2004). These are the ability model of Jack Mayer, Peter Salovey, and David Caruso that assesses EI with the MSCEIT®, the performance model of Daniel Goleman and the Hay Group measuring EI with the ECI, and the trait model of Reuven Bar-On that is reflected in the EQ-i® assessment.
