6.5. EI AND LEADERSHIP

What does EI have to do with leadership? There are a number of studies that suggest a relationship between emotional intelligence and leader performance. My own experience working with supervisors, managers, executives, and CEOs in a variety of different types of organizations leads me to believe there is a relationship between leader effectiveness and certain components of EI.

Dries and Pepermans (2007) conducted a study of 102 managers and found that high-potential managers had higher EQ-i® scores than "regular" managers. This was especially true for the EQ-i® sub-scales of Assertiveness, Independence, Optimism, Flexibility, and Social Responsibility.
